FIRST® Announces Upcoming Theme!
The FIRST® LEGO League Challenge (FLLC) is a STEAM program for our Pre Kindergarten through sixth-grade students, which kicked off in the fall of 2019. Every year the FLLC unveils a brand new theme with hands-on age-appropriate challenges for the students to explore, discover, and challenge themselves further in the different STEAM modalities.
STEAM classes are held in the library and instructed by Mrs. Hine, Ms. Anderson, and Mrs. McGreevy. The program, called FIRST® LEGO League Challenge was founded in 1998 by Dean Kamen, an American engineer, inventor, and businessman. The FLLC is an international competition organized by FIRST® for elementary and middle school students. Each year in August, FLLC teams are introduced to a new theme with a scientific and real-world challenge.
Mrs. Hine brought the FIRST® program to the Quogue School after seeing first hand how engaging, comprehensive, and innovative the program was for young learners. FLLC participants gain real-world problem-solving experiences through a guided, global robotics program, helping today’s students and teachers build a better future together. Students engage in hands-on STEM experiences, building confidence, growing their knowledge, and developing habits of learning. FIRST® LEGO League’s three divisions inspire youth to experiment and grow their critical thinking, coding, and design skills through hands-on STEM learning and robotics.
The 2020-2021 season theme is sports: Robotics-related games. The competitions will be held across three divisions:
Discover (ages 4-6)
Explore (ages 6-10)
Challenge (ages 9-14)
The new competitions will focus on tasks related to health, sports, and fitness. Once again, students will be tasked with completing a challenge designed in partnership with a panel of experts using a variety of LEGO Education products, including LEGO Education WeDo 2.0, LEGO MINDSTORMS Education EV3.
FIRST® LEGO League Discover - PreK- K
For children ages 4-6, this playful introductory STEM program ignites their natural curiosity and builds their habits of learning with hands-on activities in the classroom and at home using LEGO® Duplo bricks.
FIRST® LEGO League Explore - Grades 1-4
In Explore, teams of students ages 6-10 focus on the fundamentals of engineering as they explore real-world problems, learn to design and code and create unique solutions made with LEGO bricks and powered by LEGO Education WeDo 2.0.
FIRST® LEGO League Challenge - Grades 5-6
Friendly competition is at the heart of Challenge, as teams of students ages 9-16 engage in research, problem-solving, coding and engineering – building and programming a LEGO robot that navigates the missions of a robot game. As part of Challenge, teams also participate in a research project to identify and solve a relevant real-world problem.
