Degrees and Certifications:

Bachelor of Music Education SUNY Fredonia Masters of Music Education, Emphasis in Pedagogy, University of Hartford Kodaly Certified

Mrs. Carolyn Doyle

My name is Carolyn Doyle and I have been teaching music at Quogue Elementary School since 2006.  I hold a Bachelors of Music Education from SUNY Fredonia, emphasis in flute (click the playhead to hear recordings of me!), and a Master of Music Education from the Hartt School of Music, University of Hartford, emphasis in Pedagogy.  I completed my Kodaly certification under the direction of John Feierabend. Some of the principles I strive to attain can be found in the following quotes of Kodaly:

"The characteristics of a good musician can be summarized as follows: A well-trained ear, a well-trained intelligence, a well-trained heart, and a well-trained hand."

"We should read music in the same way that an educated adult will read a book: in silence, but imagining the sound."

"Teach music and singing at school in such a way that it is not a torture but a joy for the pupil; instill a thirst for finer music in him, a thirst which will last for a lifetime...Often a single experience will open the young soul to music for a whole lifetime.  This experience cannot be left to chance; it is the duty of the school to provide it."

I greatly enjoy teaching all of the realms of music, from Pre-Kindergarten to advanced instrumentalists.  I have studied flute and voice professionally, and I have studied the piano for many years.  I am an active professional musician as a vocalist and flautist.

Mission for the Class

I am looking forward to a wonderful year with all of the classes, Pre-K all of the way through 6th.  We will be incorporating a variety of musical elements in classroom lessons.  We will be participating in songs, dances, playing rhythmic and melodic instruments, composing, improvising, and constantly building upon Music Theory and History.

I hope for all of the students to enjoy music making throughout their years in Quogue.  I also intend for each student to become competent in aural listening skills, musical performance (vocal and instrumental), and adept at reading musical notation.

"Kodaly" quotations were compiled by KSC board member Connie Foss More, from The Selected Writings of Zoltan Kodaly, Boosey & Hawkes, 1974.
