Welcome to the 5th Grade
"Believe You Can Achieve"
Dear Students and Families,
Welcome to Mr. Hernandez’s and Mrs. Levy’s 5th grade class! I hope you all are enjoying your summer vacation. This will be my tenth year at the Quogue Elementary School and Mrs. Levy’s sixteenth. We cannot wait to get started. Last year was such an amazing school year and this year will be no different. We are extremely excited to have the opportunity to teach in such an amazing school and look forward to working with you and your child.
This year instruction will be aligned with the Common Core Curriculum as we strive to have each student “college and career ready.” We plan to implement a balanced literacy approach incorporating both appropriately leveled fiction and non fiction texts. Furthermore, instruction will be differentiated in order to meet the learning styles of all our 5th grade students.
In Math, we will be investigating such topics as place value, decimals, fractions, order of operations, graphing and more. It is our goal to teach all concepts and skills creatively making sure every student has the opportunity to succeed. In Social Studies, we will cover various topics regarding the Western Hemisphere, and in Science, we will explore a variety of concepts including properties of matter, physical and chemical changes, as well as, plant and animal needs. We have so many great things planned this year including events and field trips (hopefully) and we look forward to making this school year a memorable one.
Attached is a list of supplies you will need to start the school year. Please bring all the items in during the first week of school so we can get organized. I cannot wait to get back and see all of you!
Enjoy the rest of your summer!
